European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans working on combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been central to efforts to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the decision.

The bans were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.

Other Developments Reported Today

In other judicial developments:

  • A US district judge has halted attempts to reduce federal homeland security funding to states which resist certain immigration enforcement policies. The judge ruled the case was “another example” of tying federal aid to adherence to directives.
  • Approval was given for the deployment of 350 national guard members to New Orleans ahead of the new year, coinciding with an active immigration enforcement operation.
  • The nation of Palau will consent to take in dozens of migrants from the US in exchange for increased assistance, following concluding a formal agreement with Washington.

Additionally, a Democratic lawmaker has initiated legal action to demand the stripping of the current president’s name from a well-known performing arts center in the capital.

Analysts have also noted that recent statements regarding foreign petroleum resources align with a broader belief in some quarters of “resource imperialism”, leading to parallels with historical international actions.
